A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.
– Groucho Marx
Did you know that black cats are statistically less likely to be adopted than any other cat colour? A 2002 study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that black cats are about half as likely to be adopted as tabby cats and two-thirds less likely than white cats.
Why? They don’t really know. But there are several theories, including the following:
- They are harder to get nice photographs of because they are so dark.
- On adoption days they don’t stand out like their more colourful counterparts.
- People are just too superstitious for their own good!
- Due to their colour, they are really good at hiding!
Here at CQ Pet Rescue Inc. we have several black cats that are just as deserving of homes as any other cat or kitten we have in care. And yet, they always get overlooked, without having been met. Panther, Ninja and Shadow have been with us a for a few months now, and they all have lovely personalities. We would love to see them get the homes that they deserve!
